Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Judith Dodsworth graduated with distinction from Canberra School of Music. During subsequent studies in London and Vienna she discovered a flair for contemporary and experimental music and drama and worked extensively with such groups as the Arnold Schonberg Chor, Concentus Vocalis Wien and NeuOper Wien in numerous concerts, recordings, operas, tours and festivals. Returning to Australia, she completed a Master of Music at the University of Melbourne studying with Merlyn Quaife, and was the recipient of a number of awards including the Ormond Exhibition and Mabel Kent Scholarships.
In 2004 Judith created the role of the lead soprano in Opiume, a new chamber opera by Mark Chan for the Singapore Arts and Hong Kong New Visions Festivals. Other recent operatic roles have included her critically acclaimed and "hilarious" portrayal of Eugenia in Il Filosofo di Campagna for Stopera, the Wife in the Australian premiere of Michael Nyman’s The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat for Operalive, Noel in Nicholas Vines’ The Hive for Chamber Made Opera, various roles in Chamber Made Opera’s From The Lip, Kate Pinkerton in Melbourne Opera’s Madama Butterfly, and Donna Anna, Don Giovanni and Mercedes, Carmen for Melbourne City Opera. In 2003 she performed the haute contre role of Pygmalion in an extraordinary staging of Rameau’s opera of the same name as part of Cantata for Stopera and The opera Project. As an oratorio soloist she has performed with, among others, Melbourne and Monash University Choral Societies, Canberra Choral Society and Victoria, Monash and Camberwell Chorales, and is a regular soloist at St Francis’ and St Michael’s Churches, Melbourne. In concert and as a chamber musician she has performed for OzOpera’s Opera on the Edge, the ACT Lieder Society, and at festivals including Melbourne, Castlemaine, Port Fairy and Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields. A performer of "versatility and persuasiveness" (The Age), Judith works as a duo with acclaimed pianist Dean Sky-Lucas, and her performances have been heard on the ABC and 3MBS FM. |
