Raymond is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music where he studied composition under renowned Australian composer Gerard Brophy. His affinity with voices led him to be engaged as Assistant Conductor for Queensland Conservatorium’s production of Britten’s ‘Albert Herring’ and subsequently to conduct performances of his own compositions, ‘Les Nuit’ for chamber orchestra and soloists and his operatic scena ‘Medea’.
Following his studies he joined Opera Queensland’s Young Artist Program as a repetiteur where he was also Music Director for their Moving Opera! Program and the company’s touring schools production of ‘Hansel und Gretel’.
At the beginning of 2011 Raymond relocated to Melbourne where he took up the position of Head of Music for Melbourne Opera. During this time he has prepared soloists for operas including Faust, Carmen, Cosi fan Tutte, La Boheme, Fidelio, La Traviata and the Merry Widow. In 2012 Raymond took on the additional responsibilities of Chorus Master with Melbourne Opera. This year has marked Raymond’s conducting debut with the company with performances of The Merry Widow, MO Verdi Gala and La Traviata.
A committed pedagogue with an encyclopaedic knowledge of great opera singers of the past, Raymond is increasingly in demand as a vocal coach, working with some of Australia’s leading professional and emerging professional singers. He has also accompanied Masterclasses with Richard Bonynge AC CBE, Margreta Elkins AM, Elizabeth Connell, Susan Bullock, Jane Eaglen, Yvonne Kenny AM, Joseph Ward OBE, Sally Burgess, Jeffrey Black and Jose Carbó. On the concert platform Raymond has accompanied acclaimed Australian singers including Rosamund Illing, Peter Coleman-Wright, David Wakeham and Antoinette Halloran.
